General Information:

Boldo is an evergreen tree native to South America. This aromatic tree can reach to a height of about 20-24 feet. The tree has a dark green leaf when young red brown when dried. Moreover, white flowers that bear smell edible fruit. The leaves of the plant are opposite about 2-3 inch long entire. Boldo is an aromatic, richly branched shrub. It is an evergreen plant with ovate leathery leaves that have numerous small, wart like beads on top and slightly rolled at leaf edges. The flowers are small, bell shaped and white or yellow in color. The fruits are small, yellow, edible berries. The leaves of the plant are used as medicine. They are harvested all year around, dried and used in an herbal tea.

The leaves content numerous isoquinoline alkaloids and about 2% essential oil. Native tribes of South American had been using the leaves of Boldo for hundreds of years, both as a culinary spice and herbal medicine.

Boldo can be found wild in Chile. Still, it is specifically raised in the high areas of the Mediterranean.

How to use:

Hot Infusion:

The basic method for dried herbs and flower is, take 2-3 tablespoons of dried herb in a cup or teapot. Pour hot water over it and cover it with lid for 10-30 minutes. Hot water is needed to draw out the antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, flavonoids and volatile oils from the botanicals. Strain and squeeze out as much as liquid as possible and enjoy!

Tips:

  • You can sweeten your herbal tea with bit of honey, natural fruit juice, stevia leaves powder and or licorice root powder.
  • You can make ice cubes or pops by freezing tea in ice tray or pop molds.
