General Information:

Panax notoginseng is a medicinal plant that was first used by ethnic minorities in China. It has been one of the most acclaimed herbs in China for 400 years. In China, it is mainly produced in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces. It is one of the earliest medicinal and edible plants. Since ancient times it has been recognized as one of the best herbs.

Panax notoginseng is a hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) perennial herb, 4-5 feet tall, and growing at a slow rate with a short rhizome, a bamboo whip, and two to several fleshy roots. The taproot looks conical or cylindrical with a length of 2-5 cm long and 1-3 cm in diameter. The surface is grayish brown or grayish-yellow with intermittent vertical wrinkles and branch marks. There are stem scars on top with surrounding tumor-like bulges. Four palmately compound leaves forming one whorl at the top of the stem. Single umbel is acrogenous, about 3.5cm in diameter, and with 20 to 50 flowers; peduncle is about 12cm in length, hairless, and with vertical stripes; pedicels are slender, hairless, and about 1cm long. Flowers are yellow-green; cuppy calyx, male calyx being top-shaped, is with an edge that has 5 triangular teeth; petals are 5; stamens are 5; the ovary is with 2 rooms; styles are 2 (but the pistil lode in male flowers is 1), free, and anaclastic. No fruits are found.

How to use:   

Decoctions are suitable for roots, barks, large seeds & berries, and other dense material. The simple way to make decoction is, in a saucepan, add 1 tablespoon of dried herbs to 1 cup of water. Bring the water to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30-60 minutes. Strain and squeeze out as much as liquid as possible and enjoy!

Tips:

• You can sweeten your herbal decoctions with a bit of honey, natural fruit juice, stevia leaves powder and or licorice root powder.
