General Information:

Black haw bark is a shrub or small tree, which grows up to 8-10 meters in height. The bark of this shrub is dark grey, lustrous, and flaking. Leaves are deciduous, alternate, broadly elliptic to ovate- oblong, rarely lanceolate, 2-6 cm wide, 2-10 cm long, apex rounded or acute. Stems and truck bark ate irregularly and transversely curved or quilled or cut in to irregular shape oblong chips of varying sizes by 2-15 cm in length, 0.5-2 cm in diameter and up to 5 mm in thickness. The outer surface of young bark is silvery grey with raised oval lenticels. The outer bark is usually covered with lichens and mosses. The outer surface of older bark is greyish brown to black or reddish brown where the cork has been abraded. The root bark is cinnamon colored and bitter and astringent in teste. The fruit know as black haw is addible but to some unbearably sweet.

How to use:       

Decoctions are suitable for roots, barks, large seeds & berries, and other dense material. The simple way to make decoction is, in a saucepan, add 1 tablespoon of dried herbs to 1 cup of water. Bring the water to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30-60 minutes. Strain and squeeze out as much as liquid as possible and enjoy!

Tips:

  • You can sweeten your herbal decoctions with bit of honey, natural fruit juice, stevia leaves powder and or licorice root powder.
